External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his counterparts from Iran and Mexico on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He held discussions with Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramon de la Fuente, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas such as health, digital transformation, technology, and space. Jaishankar also met with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, for a conversation centered on current regional developments. "Glad to meet FM @araghchi of Iran this evening. Our conversation focused on recent regional developments," he posted on X. In addition, Jaishankar engaged with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Their meeting covered a wide range of topics including bilateral relations, the situation in West Asia, as well as cooperation within BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). On X, Jaishankar shared, “Good to meet with FM Sergey Lavrov of Russia on the sidelines of #BRICS2025. Discussed bilateral cooperation, West Asia, BRICS and SCO.” The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed the meeting by sharing an image and brief note on social media.

The 17th BRICS Summit, chaired by Brazil, brought together leaders from member nations Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with newly joined members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. During the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the session on Peace and Security, emphasizing that fighting terrorism must be a foundational principle and not a matter of convenience. Referring to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, PM Modi described it as an assault on India’s soul and identity, and extended gratitude to the international community for its support.

“Terrorism is the most serious threat to humanity today,” said PM Modi. “The recent attack in Pahalgam was not just an attack on India but on all of humanity. In this hour of grief, I thank all friendly nations that stood by us and expressed their support.” He added that selective outrage based on location or target is a betrayal of global solidarity, stating, “Condemning terrorism should be a principle, not a convenience.”
