Did Trump Pause Flights for UFC Freedom 250? Viral Airport Claim Sparks Confusion in Washington

A viral social media post during the high-profile UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House triggered widespread confusion after a journalist claimed flights were temporarily halted because of military activity linked to the event. The controversy began after journalist Clara Sophia Daly posted on X that passengers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were informed of delays because air traffic had allegedly been paused while military aircraft performed flyovers connected to the UFC event at the White House.
Her post quickly spread online, with several users questioning whether President Donald Trump had ordered a broader suspension of flights during the event. There is currently no official confirmation from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the White House suggesting that all flights across the United States were paused. Reports indicate the disruptions were likely limited to temporary airspace restrictions and localized delays near Washington, D.C.
UFC Freedom 250, held on the South Lawn of the White House, drew massive attention due to its unusual setting and political significance. The event coincided with celebrations linked to America’s 250th anniversary and Trump’s 80th birthday. The show featured military flyovers, patriotic displays, celebrity appearances, and heightened security measures. A joint flyover involving the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds took place during the opening ceremony, adding to security operations around the capital.
Passengers traveling through Reagan National Airport reported delays lasting more than two hours in some cases. According to Daly’s account, travelers and airport staff appeared surprised by the disruption. Still, aviation experts note that temporary flight restrictions are common around presidential events and major military operations in Washington. The White House event itself faced weather-related delays earlier in the evening because of thunderstorms and lightning concerns before eventually proceeding. UFC President Dana White had earlier stated the event would continue unless severe lightning conditions forced a pause.
The event later made headlines for its dramatic atmosphere, including fighter entrances involving military escorts and appearances by senior political figures. American fighter Justin Gaethje defeated Ilia Topuria in the main event to capture the UFC lightweight title. As clips and screenshots from the airport delay circulated online, the phrase “Trump paused all flights” began trending across social media platforms. However, available information suggests the situation involved temporary aviation restrictions around the White House rather than a nationwide grounding of aircraft. The FAA has not yet released a detailed public statement regarding the extent of the delays.
