Delhi Smog Alert: Over 10 Areas in 'Severe' AQI Crisis This Morning

Residents of the national capital woke to another heavy blanket of smog, as air quality slipped into the “severe” category across more than ten localities. The Air Quality Index surged to hazardous levels due to stagnant winter conditions that trapped emissions from vehicles, industries, and dust, leaving little room for pollutants to disperse.
Data from monitoring stations showed alarming readings across the city, with Wazirpur recording an AQI close to 445. Jahangirpuri and Vivek Vihar followed at around 442, while Rohini stood at 436. Other areas such as Bawana, Anand Vihar, Narela, and ITO also remained deep in the red zone, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The spike was largely driven by fine particulate matter like PM2.5 and PM10 and came a day after AQI levels crossed 700 in some isolated pockets.
The deteriorating air has raised serious health concerns, as such pollution can cause immediate respiratory irritation even among healthy individuals and worsen conditions like asthma and heart disease among vulnerable groups. Poor visibility disrupted road traffic and led to flight delays amid dense fog conditions, with doctors cautioning that repeated exposure during Delhi’s winter pollution cycle carries long-term health risks.
Weather forecasts indicate that poor air quality is likely to persist through the weekend, with low wind speeds continuing to trap pollutants. In response, authorities have activated GRAP measures, including restrictions on construction activity and diesel vehicles, with the possibility of tighter curbs if conditions fail to improve. Officials have urged residents to limit outdoor exposure, use protective masks and indoor air purifiers where possible, and monitor real-time air quality updates to reduce health risks during the ongoing pollution episode.
