At least two people were killed after a three-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar area on Thursday morning, while several others are feared trapped under the debris. Rescue operations were launched immediately, with multiple fire service teams deployed to the site. The incident occurred around 9:50 am in Gali Sitara, near Chawri Bazaar Metro Station in Old Delhi. The sudden collapse brought down the entire structure, leaving a large amount of rubble and triggering panic in the densely populated neighbourhood.

According to initial reports, six fire service units were rushed to the spot after authorities received information about the collapse. Firefighters and rescue personnel began searching through the debris for people who might be trapped. Senior officials also reached the location to oversee the rescue operation. Teams were working to clear the rubble and locate possible survivors, while further details about the number of people inside the building at the time of the incident were awaited.

The narrow lanes and crowded surroundings of Chawri Bazaar have added to the challenges of carrying out rescue operations. The area is one of Old Delhi’s busiest commercial hubs, with numerous wholesale markets, shops and residential buildings situated close to one another. The cause of the collapse has not yet been officially established. Authorities are expected to examine the building’s structural condition and determine whether construction activity, structural weakness or any other factor contributed to the incident.

The tragedy has once again raised concerns about building safety in older and densely populated areas of the national capital, where ageing structures and ongoing construction work require regular safety inspections. Rescue operations were underway as of the latest available reports. Further details regarding the identities of the deceased, the number of people rescued and the possibility of additional casualties are awaited.
