The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has cleared a major set of defence proposals worth about ₹2.38 lakh crore, according to PIB. The move highlights India’s push to strengthen its military amid changing regional security dynamics. Key approvals include additional procurement of the S-400 air defence system for the Indian Air Force, boosting its ability to counter aerial threats up to 400 km. The DAC also sanctioned upgrades to Su-30MKI fighter jet engines to improve performance and extend their service life.

For the Army, approvals cover a mobile air defence tracked system to counter low-flying aircraft and drones, as well as advanced tank ammunition to enhance firepower against modern armoured threats. A high-capacity radio relay system will improve secure battlefield communication. Indigenous systems also received a boost, with more Dhanush artillery guns and runway-independent UAVs approved to strengthen surveillance and firepower along borders.

The IAF will acquire new medium transport aircraft to replace ageing fleets, improving strategic airlift capabilities. Additionally, remotely piloted strike aircraft will enhance precision attack capabilities without risking pilots. For the Navy, heavy-duty hovercraft have been cleared to support coastal patrol, reconnaissance, and amphibious operations.

These decisions are part of a record year in defence procurement, with AoNs worth ₹6.73 lakh crore and contracts valued at ₹2.28 lakh crore already issued. The focus remains on indigenisation, reducing import dependence, and boosting domestic defence manufacturing. The approvals aim to fill capability gaps, modernise forces, and strengthen India’s position as a major defence power, despite challenges in execution and system integration.
