At least 45 people have lost their lives after heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding and landslides across parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, authorities confirmed.

According to officials, the majority of fatalities were reported in Afghanistan, where at least 28 people were killed and dozens injured as torrential rains swept through several provinces. The worst-hit areas included central and eastern regions such as Parwan, Maidan Wardak, Daikundi, and Logar. More than 100 homes were destroyed, leaving many families displaced.

In neighboring Pakistan, at least 17 people died, including several children, after intense rainfall caused houses to collapse, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Authorities in both countries reported widespread damage to infrastructure, with hundreds of homes either destroyed or damaged and thousands of people affected. Rescue efforts have been hampered by ongoing bad weather and difficult terrain.

Officials have warned that conditions remain unstable, with further rain expected in the coming days, raising fears of additional flooding and casualties.

The disaster highlights the vulnerability of both Afghanistan and Pakistan to extreme weather events, which experts say are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. Poor infrastructure, mountainous terrain, and decades of conflict—especially in Afghanistan—have further increased the risk and impact of such natural disasters.

The floods come at a time when the region is already facing humanitarian challenges, compounding the difficulties for affected communities struggling to recover from repeated crises.
