Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi’s recent official visit to Algeria marks a significant step in bolstering the growing defence partnership between India and Algeria. His trip, spanning from August 25 to 28, 2025, underscores India's strategic outreach to Africa, aiming to deepen military cooperation and address shared security challenges in a rapidly shifting global environment.

Upon arrival in Algiers, Gen Dwivedi was accorded a traditional Guard of Honour, symbolizing the warm and historic ties between the two nations. This ceremony was held in the presence of senior Algerian military officials, including General Said Chanegriha, the Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army. The reception reflected mutual respect and set the tone for substantive discussions on defence collaboration.

During his stay, General Dwivedi held in-depth meetings with Algerian military leadership, including Lieutenant General Mostefa Smaali, Commander of Land Forces. The agenda focused on expanding army-to-army cooperation, exchanging views on regional and international security issues, and identifying practical avenues for defence industrial and technological collaboration. India’s strategic vision, particularly its approach towards counterterrorism and regional stability, was a key topic during these discussions.

Significantly, Gen Dwivedi visited prominent Algerian military institutions such as the School of Command and Major Staff at Tamentfoust and the prestigious Cherchell Military Academy. These visits highlighted India’s commitment to sharing best practices and advancing joint training initiatives, which can enhance operational readiness and foster interoperability between the two armies.

This visit builds on previous high-profile engagements, including visits last year by India’s President Droupadi Murmu and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, reflecting sustained diplomatic momentum. It also follows the defence cooperation agreement signed by both countries in November 2024, which laid a foundation for enhanced military partnership and defence industry collaboration.

As India extends its global defence diplomacy, especially in Africa, this visit to Algeria is a clear signal of its intent to strengthen bilateral ties and contribute to regional security. By fostering closer military bonds with Algeria, India not only counters rival influences in the continent but also promotes peace and stability in strategically critical regions.
