China has urged the international community to take concrete measures to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers and United Nations personnel, highlighting growing risks faced by aid staff in conflict zones around the world.

Speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative Sun Lei emphasized the urgent need to strengthen protections for those working on the frontlines of humanitarian crises. He noted that ongoing conflicts across regions such as the Middle East, Sudan, and parts of Africa continue to expose civilians and aid workers to escalating violence.

Sun stressed that humanitarian personnel play a vital role in delivering lifesaving assistance and supporting vulnerable populations, often at great personal risk. He called for all parties involved in conflicts to respect international law and ensure the safety and security of UN staff and associated personnel.

The call comes amid alarming statistics shared during the meeting. According to UN officials, at least 326 humanitarian workers were killed in 2025 alone, with more than 1,000 deaths recorded over the past three years. A significant number of these casualties occurred in high-conflict areas such as Gaza, the West Bank, Sudan, and Ukraine.

Top UN aid officials warned that the rising death toll reflects a broader breakdown in the protection of humanitarian workers. They urged stronger accountability and immediate action to reverse what they described as a dangerous trend.

China reiterated its position that safeguarding humanitarian personnel is essential for maintaining global stability and ensuring effective crisis response. The country called for coordinated international efforts to improve security conditions, uphold humanitarian principles, and protect those working to assist people in need.

The appeal underscores growing global concern over the safety of aid workers, as conflicts continue to intensify and humanitarian operations become increasingly dangerous.
