Chhattisgarh Hit by Heavy Rain and Floods; One Killed, Several Bastar Villages Isolated

Heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life across several parts of Chhattisgarh, with flooding and waterlogging reported in multiple districts. One person has died in Kondagaon, while several villages in the Bastar region have been cut off after roads and local routes were inundated. Authorities have also closed schools in several districts as the weather situation continues to affect transportation and public safety.

The southern parts of the state have witnessed some of the most severe impacts. In Jagdalpur, floodwater entered low-lying residential areas and submerged sections of National Highway-30, affecting movement between Raipur and Jagdalpur. Villages in Sukma and Bijapur also faced connectivity problems as rising water levels flooded roads and surrounding areas.

In Kondagaon, a 40-year-old farmer reportedly died after falling into a flooded drain while attempting to catch fish in a partially submerged paddy field. Officials have urged people to stay away from swollen drains, rivers and other water bodies as water levels remain elevated following the heavy rainfall.

The weather conditions have also disrupted schooling across the state. District administrations announced the closure of government and private schools in Dantewada, Bijapur, Kondagaon, Kanker, Bastar, Gariaband, Dhamtari and Durg. Quarterly examinations scheduled in government schools in the affected areas were also postponed because of the adverse weather conditions.

Heavy rainfall has additionally pushed up water levels in reservoirs. The Gangrel reservoir in Dhamtari was reported to be close to full capacity, while Murumsilli reservoir had reached full capacity. Authorities released water from Gangrel as inflows increased, while officials continued to monitor water levels and vulnerable locations. Rainfall was particularly intense in parts of Bastar. Jagdalpur recorded more than 246 mm of rainfall on September 25, while Lohandiguda received over 230 mm. Bastanar and Tokapal also recorded more than 200 mm of rain during the period, according to reported rainfall data.

Although the intense spell has caused localized flooding and major disruptions, the state's cumulative monsoon rainfall remains close to the seasonal average. Authorities are continuing to monitor flood-prone areas, roads and rivers as further rainfall remains possible. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow instructions issued by local officials.
