Carla Bruni, former supermodel and singer-songwriter, expressed unwavering support for her husband, ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy, after he was sentenced to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy over alleged dealings with Libya. Taking to Instagram, Bruni, 57, wrote, “Love is the answer,” accompanied by the hashtag #hatewillnotwin. The ruling, harsher than expected, marks a historic first in modern French politics, as Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, would become the first former French president to serve jail time. Sarkozy has announced plans to appeal the verdict.

Bruni stood by Sarkozy, 70, as he addressed the court, maintaining his innocence and stating, “If they absolutely want me to sleep in jail, I will sleep in jail, but with my head held high.” Outside the courthouse, Bruni confronted investigative outlet Mediapart by removing and discarding the red microphone cover of the media outlet. The legal case began in 2013, following the publication of a note allegedly from Libyan intelligence in 2006 suggesting a deal with then-leader Muammar Gaddafi to fund Sarkozy’s presidential campaign.

Sarkozy and Bruni’s relationship began in 2008, shortly after his public split from his second wife, Cecilia. The couple married the same year and have a daughter born in 2011. Bruni, Italian-born, added glamour to Sarkozy’s presidency, accompanying him on state visits, making public appearances, and even writing the song “Mon Raymond” about him.

Despite his legal troubles, Sarkozy remains a respected figure in French politics, mentoring right-leaning politicians, including newly appointed Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, who sought his advice shortly after taking office this month. Bruni’s public show of support underscores her commitment to Sarkozy amid a historic and controversial chapter in French political history.
