Blinkit Facility Inspected in Mangaluru After Consumer Claims Worm in Egg

Food safety officials in Karnataka inspected a Blinkit facility in Mangaluru following a consumer complaint alleging that an egg delivered through the quick-commerce platform contained a worm. The complaint was reportedly brought to the attention of Karnataka Health Minister U T Khader, following which officials from the Food Safety Department visited the Blinkit facility at Falnir Square in Mangaluru to examine its food storage and handling practices.

During the inspection, officials reportedly found packets containing broken eggs at the facility. The staff were directed to remove the affected products from sale and dispose of them. Officials also temporarily sealed the food storage area as a precautionary measure so that the premises could be cleaned and sanitised.

The Food Safety Department is expected to issue a notice to the facility's management seeking an explanation over the incident. Further action will depend on the findings of the inspection and the response submitted by the company. Officials did not independently confirm that a worm was found inside an egg during their inspection. The claim about the worm originated from the consumer's complaint and remains an allegation at this stage.

The incident has raised concerns about the handling of perishable food items through quick-commerce delivery services. Eggs and other fresh products need appropriate storage, careful handling and regular quality checks to maintain food safety standards. The inspection also highlights the growing scrutiny faced by quick-commerce companies as their local warehouses and dark stores increasingly handle groceries and other perishable products. While fast delivery is a key part of the business model, maintaining proper hygiene and product quality remains essential.

Consumers are advised to check perishable products immediately after delivery and report damaged, spoiled or unusual-looking food items to the platform. In cases involving suspected food safety violations, complaints can also be submitted to the relevant food safety authorities. The Karnataka Food Safety Department's further findings and the response from the Blinkit facility will determine whether any food safety regulations were violated in the Mangaluru case.
