A suspect linked to the blast outside Amritsar’s Thakur Dwara Temple was killed in a shootout with Punjab Police, while another suspect managed to escape, a senior officer confirmed on Monday. Efforts are underway to apprehend the fugitive. The incident occurred on March 15 when an unidentified individual hurled an explosive device at the temple, causing damage to a section of its wall and shattering window panes. Though no casualties were reported, the blast sparked panic among residents of Amritsar’s Khandwala area.
Based on intelligence inputs, Punjab Police tracked down the suspects in Rajasansi. When officers attempted to arrest them, the accused opened fire, injuring Head Constable Gurpreet Singh and striking Inspector Amolak Singh’s turban. In response, the police retaliated, critically wounding one of the suspects. He was taken to Civil Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The second suspect managed to flee, and police are actively searching for him.
CCTV footage from the attack shows two unidentified men arriving at the temple on a motorcycle. After briefly waiting, one of them was seen throwing the explosive device before the duo sped away. Punjab Police have suggested that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), may be linked to the attack. Investigators are examining possible connections and motives behind the blast. Authorities remain on high alert, intensifying security measures in the area. Local police and intelligence agencies are collaborating to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety. The incident has heightened concerns over cross-border threats, with officials closely monitoring developments.
