Amazon has unveiled its latest digital assistant, Alexa+, at the Devices and Services event held in New York on February 26. This new iteration is powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI), significantly enhancing its capabilities. With advanced natural language processing, Alexa+ can now engage in more fluid and natural conversations, understand context better, and personalize interactions based on user preferences.
One of the biggest upgrades in Alexa+ is its ability to learn and adapt over time. Unlike previous versions, which relied on fixed responses, the new AI-powered assistant remembers user preferences, such as dietary restrictions, allergies, and frequently performed tasks. This allows it to provide more tailored responses, making daily interactions smoother and more intuitive.
Another key advancement in Alexa+ is its agentic capabilities, which means it can now complete tasks on behalf of users. Amazon has highlighted that Alexa+ can assist with event planning, online shopping, and travel bookings without requiring constant user input. It has also been integrated with popular third-party services like Uber and OpenTable, allowing users to book rides or reserve restaurant tables effortlessly.
Additionally, Alexa+ now includes document and email analysis, a feature that significantly expands its utility. Users can upload files, such as study materials, recipes, or important documents, and Alexa+ will retrieve relevant information, summarize content, or generate calendar reminders based on the provided data. It can also process forwarded emails, extracting key details to answer queries, making it a powerful tool for managing day-to-day tasks efficiently.
Beyond these major upgrades, Alexa+ introduces several other enhancements. Users can now create complex Routines using voice commands, allowing them to automate multiple tasks at once. Music playback has also been improved, with the ability to seamlessly transfer audio between devices. For entertainment, Alexa+ can now jump to specific scenes in Prime Video upon request. Additionally, the assistant can summarize activity around the house by analyzing data from Ring security cameras, keeping users informed about their surroundings in real time.
To enable these advanced features, Amazon has redesigned Alexa’s architecture from the ground up. Instead of relying on a single large language model (LLM), Alexa+ now uses multiple AI models, including Amazon's own Nova and Anthropic's Claude. This model-agnostic approach ensures that Alexa+ selects the best AI model for each specific task, making it more efficient and capable.
Amazon has also worked on improving Alexa+’s third-party integrations, allowing it to function smoothly with services like Uber, Spotify, Apple Music, Netflix, Disney+, and TripAdvisor. The assistant has been optimized to navigate websites and interact with online platforms, reducing the need for manual intervention and making tasks more automated and hassle-free.
The new Alexa+ will first launch in the United States in the coming weeks, with availability on select Echo Show devices, including Echo Show 8, Echo Show 10, Echo Show 15, and Echo Show 21. Regarding pricing, Alexa+ will cost $19.99 per month, but Amazon Prime members will have access at no additional cost, making it an appealing upgrade for existing subscribers.
