Alternative-fuel cars overtook petrol-powered vehicles in India's passenger vehicle market in August for the first time, marking a significant shift in consumer preferences, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Vehicles powered by CNG, hybrids and electricity together accounted for 41.95% of passenger vehicle retail sales in August, compared with 40.85% for petrol vehicles. While the difference was relatively small, the figures highlight the growing demand for alternatives to conventional petrol cars in India.

CNG vehicles remained the largest contributor to the alternative-fuel segment, accounting for 25.28% of passenger vehicle sales. Hybrid vehicles represented 9.04%, while electric vehicles made up 7.63%. Diesel vehicles accounted for 17.21% of the market during the month. The shift comes as Indian consumers increasingly consider fuel costs, running expenses and vehicle technology when choosing new cars. CNG vehicles have attracted buyers looking for lower operating costs, while hybrid models offer improved fuel efficiency without requiring a complete switch to an electric powertrain. Electric vehicles, meanwhile, have been gaining attention as manufacturers introduce more models and expand their presence across different price segments.

The latest figures also come amid continuing discussions around E20 petrol, which contains up to 20% ethanol. India has promoted higher ethanol blending as part of efforts to reduce its dependence on imported crude oil. However, concerns over fuel efficiency and compatibility, particularly among owners of older vehicles, have added to the wider debate over India's changing automotive fuel mix.

India's passenger vehicle market itself recorded strong growth in August. Retail sales reached 4,02,398 units during the month, up from 3,46,468 units in August 2025. This was the first time monthly passenger vehicle retail sales crossed the four-lakh mark, although sales were lower than the record 4,16,555 units recorded in July.

The broader automobile market also performed strongly. Total vehicle retail sales stood at 24,23,201 units in August, representing a 17.51% increase from the same month last year. Strong demand from rural markets contributed to the overall performance, with rural passenger vehicle sales growing faster than those in urban areas.

The August numbers do not mean petrol cars have suddenly lost their importance in India. Petrol remains the largest individual fuel category, supported by a widespread refuelling network and the availability of a large number of models. However, the combined strength of CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles shows that Indian consumers now have more alternatives when purchasing a new car. The upcoming festive season is expected to provide a clearer indication of whether the August shift can be sustained. Automakers and dealerships are preparing for higher demand during the traditionally strong September-November sales period.

The latest data nevertheless points to an important change in India's automobile industry. Alternative-fuel vehicles are no longer a niche choice, and their combined market share has reached a level where they can compete directly with petrol vehicles. Whether this becomes a lasting trend will depend on factors including vehicle prices, fuel costs, charging and CNG infrastructure, and the availability of new models in the coming months.
