A Day After India's UN Map Remarks, Pakistan Raises Jammu and Kashmir Issue Again

A fresh diplomatic exchange between India and Pakistan has emerged over Jammu and Kashmir after Islamabad responded to New Delhi’s clarification regarding a recent United Nations General Assembly resolution on the representation of geographical regions on world maps. India had supported the UN resolution, which seeks to promote more accurate map projections for representing the relative size of the world’s continents. The resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly with an overwhelming majority. However, India later clarified that its support for the initiative should not be interpreted as a change in its position on territorial boundaries or sovereignty.

India’s External Affairs Ministry stressed that the resolution deals with cartographic representation and does not alter political boundaries or the territorial status of any region. New Delhi reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh must be represented in accordance with India’s official map and maintained that any inaccurate depiction of the country’s territory would not be acceptable.

The clarification came amid discussions over how territories would be represented under the UN-backed mapping initiative. India made a distinction between the technical issue of map projection and political questions concerning borders and sovereignty. Pakistan subsequently rejected India’s position and once again raised its longstanding claims concerning Jammu and Kashmir. Islamabad described New Delhi’s assertions regarding the region as unacceptable and maintained its view that the status of Jammu and Kashmir remains an unresolved issue.

The Pakistani response has brought the Kashmir issue back into the diplomatic spotlight, despite the UN resolution itself being primarily concerned with cartographic accuracy. The development reflects the broader sensitivity surrounding the representation of Jammu and Kashmir in international forums and maps. India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of the country and has rejected Pakistan’s characterization of the region as a disputed territory. Pakistan, on the other hand, continues to press its position on Kashmir in international forums.

The latest exchange is unlikely to alter the longstanding positions of either side, but it highlights how even technical discussions at the United Nations can become politically sensitive when they involve the depiction of territories claimed by both India and Pakistan. The episode also comes amid continued diplomatic tensions between the two neighbouring countries, with Jammu and Kashmir remaining one of the most contentious issues in their bilateral relationship.
