120 Social Media Accounts Face Action Over Jamui Minor's Identity, Bihar Police Warn Users

Bihar Police have registered a case against around 120 social media accounts for allegedly circulating a video connected to an incident involving two minor girls in Jamui district and exposing the identity of one of the minors. The police action followed the circulation of the video across social media platforms. Authorities have warned users against uploading, forwarding or reposting the footage, stressing that revealing the identity of a minor involved in such a case can attract legal action.

Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal said the Cyber Police Station has initiated action against the social media accounts identified in connection with the circulation of the video. The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Information Technology Act and the Juvenile Justice law.

The development comes as police continue their investigation into the original incident involving the two Class 10 students. According to reports, the minors were returning from the Madwa Pahad area when they were allegedly stopped and harassed by a group of youths. A video of the incident subsequently surfaced online.

Police have already taken action against several suspects in connection with the incident, while a Special Investigation Team has been formed to investigate the case and identify others allegedly involved. Investigators are also examining available video footage and digital evidence as part of the probe. Officials have appealed to members of the public not to circulate the video or any material that could reveal the identity of the minor. Police have emphasised that social media users who come across such content should report it to the platform instead of downloading or sharing it.

The case has also highlighted the importance of protecting the privacy of children involved in sensitive criminal investigations. While social media can quickly bring attention to an incident, the circulation of identifiable footage involving minors can cause further distress and may also create legal complications for those who share it. The investigation into the Jamui incident and the online circulation of the video is continuing, with police expected to take further action based on the evidence gathered during the probe.
