Syria is conducting its first parliamentary elections today (September 15) since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. These elections will be carried out entirely through indirect means via local institutions. Community-based electoral bodies, made up of local leaders, are tasked with nominating and choosing the candidates.
