Jammu & Kashmir Sees Separate Protests by BJP and National Conference
Political tensions intensified in Jammu and Kashmir as the BJP and the ruling National Conference (NC) organised separate counter-protests in Srinagar on the same day. The BJP held a large demonstration beginning at the Ghanta Ghar in Lal Chowk before attempting to march toward the Civil Secretariat. Party leaders criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s administration over issues including higher electricity tariffs, unemployment among young people, delays in fulfilling electoral commitments and what they described as shortcomings in governance. NC supporters gathered near the BJP office, pressing the Centre to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and fulfil its commitments regarding constitutional safeguards. Authorities deployed a heavy security presence across Srinagar, with barricades preventing both groups from proceeding with their planned marches. Protesters from both parties subsequently held sit-ins at different locations, highlighting the growing political confrontation in the Union Territory.
