In a notable development for India’s diplomatic outreach, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made history by becoming the first Indian foreign minister to undertake a standalone visit to Ukraine, where he held talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Ukraine described the visit as “historic,” while Russia carried out another wave of jet-powered Shahed drone attacks during Jaishankar’s trip. The discussions focused on key issues including Black Sea maritime trade, global food security and India’s efforts to support a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Zelensky expressed appreciation for India’s position, coming shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also conveyed a message of peace to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
