Fighting has escalated in the Democratic Republic of Congo as government forces battle M23 rebels, who have seized large parts of Goma after a rapid offensive. Thousands of civilians are fleeing the violence. The Congolese government has accused Rwanda of waging war by sending troops to support the rebels. While Rwanda does not deny backing M23, it claims that Congo is aiding militias trying to overthrow its government. Since 2021, M23 has taken control of large areas in the mineral-rich east. Their recent advances have displaced over 400,000 people in North and South Kivu provinces, according to the UN.
