Judges at the International Criminal Court have issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him, along with others, of committing war crimes such as mass starvation, murder, and persecution. Arrest warrants were also issued for former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif.
The judges stated there were "reasonable grounds" to believe the three men were criminally responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Netanyahu condemned the ICC’s decision, calling it "antisemitic," while Hamas welcomed the warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, calling them a historic precedent.
The ICC claimed there was evidence to suggest Netanyahu and Gallant were co-responsible for war crimes, including using starvation as a weapon of war and committing crimes against humanity such as murder, persecution, and inhumane acts. Israel maintains that Hamas commander Mohammed Deif was killed in Gaza in July, but the ICC stated it could not confirm his death and had "reasonable grounds" to believe he was responsible for numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity. The arrest warrants mean the men could be arrested if they travel to any country that is a member of the International Criminal Court.
