Earlier, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi remarked that while working toward the goal of 'Viksit Bharat 2047,' the army has successfully transformed Jammu and Kashmir from a region known for terrorism to one that attracts tourism. Speaking at an event at Savitribai Phule Pune University, General Dwivedi emphasized the army's efforts to contribute to national development, stating, "In J&K, we have shifted from terrorism to tourism."
General Dwivedi also discussed the Indian Army's role in securing India's growth, noting that security is crucial for sustainable development. He emphasized that the Indian Army plays a key role in fostering a "progressive" and "peaceful" India by 2047. Additionally, he touched on the army's involvement in disaster relief, citing the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) as an example, which was conceptualized under General NC Vij following the 2001 Bhuj earthquake.
The COAS further highlighted India's preparations for the 2036 Olympics, including the development of talent through sports programs and events like the Durand Cup and Kashmir Premier League. He also stressed the army's commitment to India's self-reliance, noting that 85% of their capital expenditure is spent on 'Made in India' defense products, which support the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and contribute to local economies, especially in regions like Ladakh.
