Chennai is experiencing high tides and strong winds as a deep depression develops over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the depression, currently moving northwest, is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry, by the morning of November 30. As it approaches land, the depression is predicted to weaken, with wind speeds ranging from 45-55 km/h, gusting up to 65 km/h.
The depression is impacting coastal areas, particularly in Chennai and nearby districts. The IMD has issued warnings of rough sea conditions and advised fishermen to stay ashore. Along with gusty winds, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected, especially along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
The IMD has urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines. Coastal authorities have been placed on high alert as the system nears landfall. On Thursday, heavy rains from Cyclone Fengal caused significant damage to paddy crops in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district, submerging over 800 acres of farmland.
In response, the Indian Navy has activated a disaster response plan, focusing on humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and search and rescue operations. Working closely with state and civil authorities, the Navy is mobilizing relief supplies and positioning specialized teams in vulnerable areas. Cyclone Fengal, expected to intensify over the next 48 hours, is forecast to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding to Tamil Nadu’s coastal regions. Residents in low-lying and coastal areas have been urged to stay vigilant and follow safety advisories.
