Maldives President inaugurates a new airport constructed with support from India.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the Hanimaadhoo International Airport, a major infrastructure project funded through India’s Line of Credit programme. He hailed the new airport as a “gateway to prosperity” for the northern Maldives and a key driver for economic growth, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries, according to a statement from the President’s Office.
Speaking at the ceremony on Sunday, Muizzu described the airport as a “catalyst for unlocking the potential of northern Maldives and enhancing global connectivity,” emphasizing that it symbolizes economic transformation. The inauguration was attended by India’s Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and senior officials from both countries. Muizzu also noted that the airport stands as a testament to the enduring strength of India-Maldives relations, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The Indian High Commission in the Maldives, in a post on X, described the new facility as a “true vehicle for progress and prosperity” and a reflection of India’s commitment under its Neighbourhood First and MAHASAGAR visions. The airport’s development was financed through an USD 800 million line of credit from India’s EXIM Bank under a 2019 agreement, with construction contracted to India’s JMC Projects at a cost of USD 136.6 million. The new airport is expected to significantly boost tourism in the northern atolls.
Earlier that day, Minister Naidu met with Maldives’ Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, where both reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening bilateral ties. During the talks, Khaleel thanked India for its continued support, and both sides discussed ways to deepen cooperation, improve connectivity, and pursue shared development goals, according to state-run PSM News. The Indian High Commission later described the meeting as “fruitful discussions” in another post on X.
