Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reached out to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla to assess the impact of the ongoing heavy rains and floods in the northeastern states. PM Modi assured that the central government would provide full support and assistance.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X, stating, “A short while ago, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called to enquire about the flood situation in Assam. I informed him that relentless rain in Assam and neighboring states has caused widespread flooding, affecting many lives. I also updated him on the state’s relief operations.” He added that the Prime Minister expressed deep concern and guaranteed full backing from the Centre for rescue and rehabilitation efforts, thanking him for his continuous support.

Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang also took to X to express his gratitude, writing, “On behalf of Sikkim's people, I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji for his concern and support during this crisis of floods and landslides. Our administration is fully dedicated to addressing the situation and helping affected citizens. Thank you for your kind attention, Sir.” Assam remains in a critical state, with the death toll rising to 11 — six people lost their lives due to floods and five in landslides, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Over 5.15 lakh people across 22 districts have been impacted.

In Sikkim, the government has declared the continuous rainfall damage in Mangan district since May 28 as a “disaster” under Section 22(2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Tragically, three army personnel lost their lives, and six others went missing after a landslide hit an Indian Army camp in Chaten, Lachen on Sunday evening.

In Manipur, joint rescue efforts are underway involving the Fire Service, Assam Rifles, SDRF, NDRF, and the Indian Army to evacuate stranded students and staff from the flood-affected Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal, which is facing severe waterlogging from continuous rain.
