Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “transformational force” who has refined India’s governance and modernized its economy with visionary leadership. Speaking at an event honoring the Indian diaspora, she described PM Modi’s visit as a moment of deep significance, especially for Indo-Trinidadians, calling him one of the world’s most respected leaders.
She emphasized the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago, referring to them as bonds of ancestry, kinship, and love. Bissessar recalled Modi’s earlier visit in 2002, noting how he returned now as a celebrated global leader. She also referenced the arrival of the first Indian ship, Fatel Razack, in 1845, highlighting the enduring spirit and success of the Indian diaspora.
Quoting a poem by Modi, she spoke of the shared struggles and resilience of Indian ancestors and celebrated the unity across oceans. She applauded India’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially Modi’s decision to send vaccines to small nations like Trinidad and Tobago, calling it an act of humanity and compassion. As a mark of gratitude, she announced that PM Modi would receive Trinidad and Tobagos highest civilian honour, the Order of the Republic, recognizing his global leadership and dedication to shared heritage.
In his remarks, PM Modi acknowledged the courage and contributions of the Indian diaspora and highlighted his emotional connection to Trinidad and Tobago through shared Bihari roots with Bissessar. He offered sacred water from the Mahakumbh and Sarayu River to the Ganga Dhara in the Caribbean, symbolizing spiritual unity. This visit is PM Modi’s first official trip to Trinidad and Tobago and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over two decades.
