Jared Kushner, the influential son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, arrived in Israel on Sunday (Nov 9) to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discuss the implementation of Washington’s plan to end the Gaza conflict, according to a source familiar with the matter. The source, speaking anonymously as the meeting had not been publicly announced, said Kushner was expected to meet Netanyahu on Monday. Neither the White House nor Netanyahu’s office immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Trump unveiled a 20-point peace plan in September aimed at ending the two-year Gaza war, beginning with a ceasefire that started on Oct 10 and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Since then, Hamas has freed 20 living hostages and returned the remains of 24 others, while four deceased hostages’ bodies are still in Gaza. The next stage of the ceasefire envisions a multinational force gradually assuming security duties in Gaza from Israeli forces. An Israeli government spokesperson said Sunday that Turkish troops would not be part of that force.
Responding to Israel’s stance, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said at a Manama security conference earlier this month that Turkey would still participate. Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance stated last month that Ankara could play a “constructive role,” but stressed that Washington would not impose foreign troops on Israel’s territory.
