A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for fostering corruption and violence in West Bengal—highlighting incidents like the Murshidabad riots and the teacher recruitment scam—Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded strongly, denouncing the PM’s remarks as part of a “vicious and false campaign” aimed at gaining political mileage.
In a statement posted on X, Mamata accused the Prime Minister of spreading misinformation and attempting to undermine her governments work in Alipurduar. She described the campaign as “politically motivated” and “self-serving,” meant to obscure the development her administration has brought to North Bengal. Emphasizing her government’s achievements, Mamata listed several developmental milestones in Alipurduar since it became Bengal’s 20th district in 2014. These include infrastructure projects like the Dooars Kanya administrative complex, major upgrades in healthcare with new hospitals, neonatal care units, nursing schools, and wellness centres, as well as educational institutions like Alipurduar University and a new engineering college.
On welfare, she cited widespread benefits under schemes such as Lakshmir Bhandar, Kanyashree, Khadyasathi, Sabuj Sathi, and Swasthya Sathi—impacting lakhs of residents. She also noted the revival of eight tea gardens, wage hikes to ₹250 for tea workers (India’s highest), and various support initiatives including housing, free ration, and employment generation. Mamata concluded by rejecting divisive politics, asserting that her government works inclusively for all communities, and stands firmly with the people of Alipurduar.
