New Delhi, Feb 4 (AHN) Political reactions are pouring in over West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee taking the fight over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to Delhi, accusing the BJP and Election Commission of collusion against the genuine voters of Bengal, particularly her support base. Today, the Chief Minister is likely to present herself in the Supreme Court, during hearing of her petition challenging the ongoing verification of electoral rolls in the state.
Her forceful counter to EC's voter verification drive in Bengal has invited many reactions, with leaders from many political parties weighing in, on her confrontation with the poll panel.
Reacting to her recent meet with the CEC, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav strongly defended the West Bengal Chief Minister, drawing a historical comparison.
“Mamata is the Rani of Jhansi, she knows how to fight, she knows how to fight. It seems there’s only one man who was born…” Yadav told AHN, praising her political resilience and assertiveness in distressing situations.
On the other hand, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh launched a sharp attack on the Chief Minister, questioning her visit to Delhi and alleging political theatrics.
“SIR is happening here. Why is she going to Delhi? She has understood that if SIR happens, she will not return to Bengal again. A 1.30-hour meeting took place, and after coming out, she is creating drama. SIR is taking place across the whole nation, there is no problem, but she is taking along BLOs with her and creating drama,” Ghosh said.
Adding another perspective, PDP MLA Waheed Para backed Mamata Banerjee’s move to seek judicial intervention, calling it a broader democratic concern.
“The concern about SIR is shared by every democratic party. If there is any issue with transparency or any problem with the voting process, it is a concern for everyone. And it is very good that she has approached the Supreme Court regarding this,” Para said.
The Chief Minister has alleged that the exercise, being carried out by the Election Commission of India (ECI), is politically motivated and could lead to large-scale disenfranchisement of voters.
In her petition, Banerjee has questioned the legality of the SIR process and alleged that the manner in which it is being conducted could result in the disenfranchisement of lakhs of voters, particularly those from marginalised sections. She accused the ECI of acting with political intent and adopting an “authoritarian approach”, stating that the situation is “extremely worrying for any democratic society”.
The Chief Minister has sought Apex Court’s intervention and prayed for appropriate directions to the Election Commission to ensure fairness, transparency and protection of democratic rights.
