India has officially joined the Russia-led Zapad-2025 military exercises, marking a significant moment amid its ongoing trade tensions with the United States. For the first time, New Delhi has deployed a contingent of 65 personnel, predominantly from the prestigious Kumaon Regiment, to participate in this large-scale, five-day military drill conducted by Russia and Belarus. The exercises, which included around 100,000 troops, featured an impressive display of military strength with nuclear-capable bombers, warships, artillery, and over 300 aircraft taking part.

This participation highlights India's strategic intent to reinforce its defense ties with Russia despite growing friction with the US. Relations between New Delhi and Washington have been strained following the Biden administration's decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports. This tariff was largely a response to India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil, a move the US perceives as indirectly supporting Moscow amid the Ukraine conflict.

India’s Defense Ministry framed the participation as a move to "strengthen defense cooperation and foster camaraderie" with Russia, underlining a commitment to mutual trust and collaboration. The Indian troops engaged in joint tactical training, special arms exercises, and battlefield maneuvers alongside Russian and Belarusian forces, showcasing interoperability and readiness in a multinational combat environment.

India was not alone in this drill. Several other countries, including Iran, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali, also contributed forces, reflecting a broad coalition in the region’s complex geopolitical landscape. Iran’s involvement, alongside India’s, underlines a shared interest in bolstering defense capabilities amidst heightened global tensions, especially as NATO and Russia maintain a watchful standoff in Eastern Europe.

This military collaboration comes at a crucial time when US-India trade relations are fragile. The tariff imposition has prompted renewed negotiations aimed at resolving differences, with talks described recently as "positive" though sensitive topics like Indian agricultural market access and energy policy remain sticking points. India’s strategic autonomy, especially its reliance on Russian oil and defense equipment, remains a core issue in these talks.
